*T&FT@30 – Rewind 1992

The Barcelona 1992 Olympic Games was the focus of the year with the success of Linford Christie and Sally Gunnell the standout athletics memories as well as Bronze medals for Kriss Akabusi, Steve Backley and both 4 x 400m squads. Not forgetting Derek Redmond’s determined “dad assisted” 400m semi-final drama.

T&FT had a large group based at the resort of Salou an hour south of Barcelona and T&FT’s arrangements included a private bus transfer service to / from Barcelona which ran efficiently during the Games. When thousands of other fans had the easily predictable horrendous coastal rail travel problems that seriously compromised their event experience the reputation of T&FT was established as a thoughtful and reliable organiser reflected in growing numbers of new clients in the years that followed. Whilst T&FT daily newsletters & client social events kept clients informed of on and off track news as well as entertained a “T&FT athletics fans fraternity” was being established.

Another highlight of the year was the unforgettable trip to the IAAF World Cup in Havana, Cuba. As the only overseas organised group of 35 fans in the first year that tourism opened in Cuba it was a real adventure. As the sole occupants of the tank-like Tupolev jet-prop aircraft from Stansted to Havana via Gander and plied with rum cocktails as the only source of inflight entertainment the scene was set. Great athletics in a crumbling stadium in a city where tourists were a complete curiosity plus an add-on to the newly built Varedo beach resort to enjoy the Caribbean sun – the exciting life of an athletics fan!
